Water purification mixes come in lightweight powder packets, are portable and easy to use for camping, traveling, backpacking, hiking, hunting or for emergencies or natural disasters.

Most water purification packets contain common water treatment chemicals, such as ferric sulphate and calcium hypochlorite.

Both are highly effective for removing contaminants from water such as sediment, bacteria, viruses and even giardia (a type of parasite that can cause severe illness and intestinal discomfort).

Easy to Use

Water purification mixes are affordable, easy to use, and you can carry them with you wherever you go.

Using water purification mixes is simple:

  1. Open the packet and pour powder mix into the amount of water per manufacturer instructions.
  2. Stir to thoroughly mix the powder in the water
  3. Let the water sit for a specified time (usually about 30 minutes)
  4. Pour the purified water into a clean container and drink.

Note:  The purified water packets (such as the SOS Emergency Water Packets) contain purified water, not a powder mix.

3.  SOS® Emergency Purified Water Packets

This product is not a powder mix; it is a packet of purified water.  We are including it because it is in its own category and it has some advantages.

The advantage of this product is that they have a much longer shelf life than the mixes. (5 years compared to 1 year for most powder packets).   In addition, they can withstand a much wider range of temperatures than the powder packets.

The main disadvantage is that the packets are not as lightweight as the powder mixes so they are not going to be great for transporting while backpacking or hiking.  However, they still beat a water bottle.

Benefits include:

  • Water in packet is already purified and bacteria free.
  • Ideal for 72-hour survival kits, hiking, camping, disaster and emergency situations.
  • Can withstand temperatures ranging from -40° F. to 230° F
  • U.S. Coast guard and Transport Canada approved.
  • Can be frozen and used as a compress and then will still be usable as safe drinking water.
  • 5-year shelf life.
