With the winter months finally falling behind us, it’s time to prepare for the warmer months ahead. Winter is a great time to hibernate and to slow things down while the days are short and the weather is cold.

However, winter and spring often demand different kinds of routines for our bodies. If you’re thinking about improving your health as spring approaches, the tips below can help.

Get Plenty of Rest

Sleep is so important when it comes to health. Not only does the body do vital repairs during sleep, but it is also known to regulate hormones and improve your cardiovascular health. Sleep also plays a role in weight gain and immunity, so ensure that you get at least 8 or 9 hours of sleep each night. Your mind and body will thank you

Increase Exercise

For many people, the winter equates to less exercise, and this is perhaps more evident during the pandemic when many countries have been in lockdown for some time. Exercise is an important mood regulator, and if done in steady moderation, it can also be beneficial for immunity, regulating sleep, maintaining a healthy weight, and boosting your energy.

If you’ve been more stagnant over the winter period, increase your exercise gradually. Whether it’s a long walk or a new physical activity, ensure that you start small. Otherwise, you’re more apt not to want to do it.

Eat Sensibly

The winter period can also encourage people to eat more calories and for a good reason. Cold weather encourages us to increase our fat stores, and that becomes even more pronounced during Christmas when we eat more than our fair share. With spring peeking around the corner, it’s a good idea to start decreasing those calories and eating a less calorific diet. Increase your consumption of organic fruits and vegetables and eat lean proteins and healthy fats. Drinking plenty of water is also important for hydrating your cells and cleaning out toxins. Just make sure you’re drinking the filtered kind!

Attend to Your Mental Health

The long, dark days of winter can sometimes cause people to become more depressed and sedentary than usual. If this sounds familiar, it’s a good idea to take care of your mental health so that you can look forward to the benefits of spring. If you’ve found yourself struggling with depression and anxiety, or if you’re wondering how to treat ptsd (post-traumatic stress disorder), then it’s a good idea to speak to someone or seek professional help.

Make Time for Relaxation

Relaxation can easily be forgotten, especially in today’s hectic world. With work, obligations, chores, and family to attend to, finding time to unwind can be unheard of. However, relaxation is an important part of staying healthy as it allows your body and mind to slow down and unwind. By not relaxing, you end up staying on high alert, which can lead to tension, stress, fatigue, and burnout. So, try to take a few minutes out of your day to sit quietly, read a book, or just do nothing.
