Water Benefits Health News, Issue #14

January 8, 2013

Hello, Water Friend,

I am so grateful for clean drinking water! Are you?

Many people around the world still have to walk many miles a day just to get a bucket of water that is relatively safe to drink. Can you imagine? And others don’t even have that option.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 3.4 million people die every year as a result of water-related diseases!!!

This fact makes water-related disease the leading cause of death around the world. Most of the victims are young children, the vast majority of whom die of illnesses caused by organisms in water sources contaminated by raw sewage.

Four thousand children die each day as a result of diseases caused by ingestion of polluted water, according to a recent United Nations assessment. The report states that 4 out of 10 people in the world, especially in Africa and Asia, do not have clean water to drink.

The United States has one of the “safest” water supplies in the world, for which I am extremely grateful.

However, even though our tap water is relatively safe to drink, it is still not healthy in the long term. It often contains numerous organic and inorganic contaminants, as well as unhealthy water treatment additives such as chlorine and fluoride.

The good news for many people in developed countries is that we can spend as little as $100 for a good tap water filter in our homes and have clean and healthy drinking water for pennies a day.

However, the bigger issue for all of us – people living in developed and third world countries, as well as all living things -- is water pollution.

It is an ominous topic, but in this issue we will focus on some simple solutions -- practical steps that we can take as individuals to limit the pollution in our neighborhoods and cities.

Thus, I hope you will take a few minutes to read our feature article “Solutions to Water Pollution: 5 Simple Ways You Can Make a Difference.” And then give thanks for your next glass of filtered drinking water.

To your health and hydration,

Nancy Hearn, CNC

Solutions to Water Pollution: 5 Simple Ways You Can Make a Difference

The key solutions to water pollution come down to individual responsibility because we all have a direct impact on the environment. From the toilet we flush to the garbage we throw away, we stamp our footprints into our environment on a daily basis.

What kind of daily footprints do you leave? Are they large and deep or small and light?

While millions of people take advantage of common conveniences such as buying plastics or driving cars, our environment is slowly being degraded. For example, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated 40 percent of our rivers and lakes as unsafe for swimming and fishing.
