Lemon Water Limitation per Day? Possible Combinations?

Hello, I'm Ramzy from the Middle East. Thank you so much for this wonderful site.

My story is simple with lemon water. I've been through a lot of diet plans trying to reduce my weight. My problem started with high blood pressure due to overweight, and when I checked with my physician he suggested I try drinking 1 liter of warm lemon water on an empty stomach every day.

It's been 2 weeks now since I started, and I feel incredibly energetic and active recently. I checked my blood pressure and noticed a slight reduction.

A bit of reading confirmed to me that this wonderful drink doesn't stop at reducing blood pressure.

All those benefits on the liver, kidney, digestive system, blood pressure, skin, even weight loss--something tells me my physician knew his stuff.

But lately, I started craving for lemon water. After finishing my daily 1 liter jug, I feel the need to make another jug by dawn. And since it makes my throat a little dry in the morning, I fear it might not be very wise to drink two rounds in one day.

Is there a limit to how much we can drink lemon water? Is my craving for it normal or should I stop at some point?

One more thing, would there be any possible combinations with lemon to make it more tolerable? I tried strawberries but the taste goes slightly off for me. Tried small slices of apple and that seemed to work fine. Still, I'm interested to hear your opinion.

Again, thank you for this site and the opportunity to learn so much about lemon water.

ANSWER:

Thank you for sharing your experience with lemon water, Ramzy!

How much lemon water you drink depends somewhat on how much fresh-squeezed lemon you use in the liter of water, as well as your height, weight, and activity levels.

In general, I recommend drinking ¼ to ½ of a fresh-squeezed lemon in 12 to 16 ounces of water. So for one liter, that would be about ½ to 1 lemon for daily use.

Thus, I do not recommend using more than 1 lemon a day, except for short periods of time (say, one to two weeks) when someone is trying to increase detoxification in the body.

In addition, as I have mentioned on other pages, too much lemon juice can affect the enamel on teeth. Thus, if drinking a stronger dilution of lemon water than suggested or drinking more than usual, it is a good idea to rinse one’s mouth with plain mineral water after drinking the lemon water.

Too much of a good thing is rarely ever beneficial to our health. Moderation and variation is always the key when it comes to nutrition and supplementation.

If you are finding the taste of lemon water intolerable, that tells me that you might be putting too much lemon in the water, making it too bitter. Try decreasing the amount of fresh lemon in your water.

If you are looking for the most therapeutic benefits of lemon water, I would not add any other fruits, sweeteners or anything else. Sugar of any sort, include natural fruit sugars, changes the chemistry.

Just remember, with lemon water, a little goes a long way and provides many health benefits. No need to overdo it.
