Demerits of Drinking Lemon Water?

I will like to know if there are some demerits of drinking lemon water?

Secondly, can drinking lemon water cure hepatitis B?

WBH response: I don't think there are any demerits of drinking lemon water, but a few cautions. Any adult or child will glean numerous health benefits from drinking lemon juice as long as they take into consideration their size, weight, and taste preferences.

Caution 1: Drinking too much lemon water too quickly can cause uncomfortable detoxification symptoms.

Detoxification symptoms might include fatigue, headaches, sleepiness, or bowel changes. It is not necessary to experience these symptoms if you start by drinking a weak dilution of lemon juice, especially if you have health challenges.

Thus, for an average adult, I recommend starting with ¼ teaspoon of fresh-squeezed lemon juice in about 8 to 12 ounces of water first thing in the morning.

For optimal ongoing benefits, I recommend gradually increasing to ½ teaspoon lemon juice in 8 to 12 ounces of water twice a day.

It is best to drink lemon water about 30 minutes before a meal to help your body get the most digestive benefits from it.

Caution 2: People with known citrus allergies should not drink lemon water.

Citrus allergies are relatively uncommon. However, a lemon allergy can cause a variety of uncomfortable symptoms. Thus, if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any type of citrus fruit, you could have a reaction to drinking lemon water.

In addition, a lemon allergy can develop or subside at any time. This is another good reason to start with a weak dilution of lemon water to see how your body responds.

You can read more on my site about Lemon Allergy Symptoms.

Caution 3: Drinking lemon juice is not a good idea for someone who has ulcers.

Even though I believe lemon water can actually help to prevent ulcers, if someone already has a pre-existing ulcer, drinking lemon water will almost always cause more pain, even in a weak dilution.

I know there is some debate on this issue, but from my experience I definitely would not recommend drinking lemon water until the ulcer is cleared up. Consult your health practitioner if in doubt.

Caution 4: Drinking lemon juice can wear down tooth enamel.

Straight lemon juice is very acidic (about 2.5 on the pH scale). For this reason, I don’t recommend eating lemon slices or drinking straight lemon juice without water.

According to Drug.com, “Lemon juice may cause loss of gloss, alteration in enamel color, and irregular dental tissue on tooth enamel.”

I even like to rinse my mouth with alkaline water (mineral rich) after drinking a glass of lemon water (which for me is typically ½ lemon in 12 ounces of water).

In addition to these cautions, some people have told me they simply don’t like the taste of lemons.

I would say these people are in the minority since most people seem to really like the taste of lemon water and generally prefer lemon water over plain drinking water.

For those who don’t like the taste of lemons but want the health benefits of lemon water, I recommend just adding a teaspoon of lemon juice to 12 ounces of water. Any lemon juice is better than none.

To answer your second question, “Can drinking lemon water cure hepatitis B?”

I would have to simply say, I don’t know, but I seriously doubt that lemon water alone could cure hepatitis B. It could certainly help by supporting immune function, promoting healthy liver function, blood circulation, and gastrointestinal health.

In general, I believe only the body (including the person’s attitude, emotions, and spirit) can heal itself. I just don’t believe anything outside the body (including food, supplements, medications, or treatments) will actually “cure” anything. Just my opinion, of course.
