Light is the essential element from which all physical life originates and is energized.

As a nutrition consultant, I remember when I first learned that particles of sunlight (called bio-photons) are actually stored in fresh, whole food. This awareness gave me even greater appreciation for our sun.

Light energy from the sun can also be harnessed to purify water. Solar water purification is an inexpensive and simple method that you might want to know about for possible use during emergencies or natural disasters.

Solar water disinfection is not as effective as modern filtration methods for daily drinking water since it does not remove toxic chemicals and heavy metals found in most tap water and even some well water.

However, solar water disinfection is still recommended by the World Health Organization for household water treatment and storage.

Our feature article in this issue outlines three different types of solar water disinfection, its benefits and limitations, as well as instructions on how to use the method.

Solar Water Purification – Simple, Cheap and Effective

Solar water purification is a method of water disinfection that everyone should know about for emergency, natural disaster or wilderness survival situations. It is simple, effective, and cheap.

This method of water disinfection effectively rids the water of disease-causing biological substances such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.

The main disadvantage of this method is that it does not remove non-biological substances such as heavy metals and toxic chemicals.

There are 3 main types of solar disinfection, which use electricity, heat, or ultraviolet radiation.
