Since ancient times, people have searched for the fountain of youth (some magical food, potion or device) that would help them live longer.
Is it possible to slow down or even reverse the aging process?
To answer this question, we need to first understand the process of aging.
There are certainly many factors, but in this article series I will discuss just two of the known causes of aging: (1) free-radical damage and (2) accumulated waste in the body.
Millions of metabolic processes are occurring within our bodies all the time. These processes require oxygen and can create harmful by-products called free radicals, which are known to cause cellular damage.
We have learned from decades of research that free-radical damage is a major cause of aging, as well as the pain, fatigue, and other symptoms associated with aging.
When free radicals interact with cellular DNA, they can have serious consequences, such as cancer and heart disease.
Our body is designed to handle a certain amount of free radicals. But when free-radical production becomes excessive or prolonged, damage will most likely occur and health will deteriorate.
Most of us are exposed to a number of free-radical sources daily. Some of these include:
You can begin to boost your immunity and neutralize free radicals by eating an abundance of fresh vegetables and fruits, as well as nuts, seeds sprouted grains, and other foods that are high in fiber.
These same foods are high in a class of nutrients called antioxidants, especially vitamins A, C, E, as well as the minerals zinc and selenium.
White meat, tuna, lentils, beans, nuts, seeds, onions and garlic are high in the amino acids cysteine and glutathione, which are another great source of antioxidants.
Many fruits are high in antioxidants, especially the “super berries,” such as seabuckthorn, goji, acai, noni, and amalaki, which are often formulated as nutritional beverages and available at most health food stores.
Drinking unfiltered tap water, which most often contains chemical additives such as chlorine and fluoride as well as numerous other contaminants, can also accelerate the process of oxidation and aging.
This is significant since our body is on average 70% water.
The solution is to drink water that has a high degree of contaminant filtration. Thus, investing in a quality drinking water system for tap or well water is our first recommendation.
Bottled water is not a viable solution since the industry is poorly regulated and cannot be trusted.
If interested, you can read more about why we don't recommend bottled water below.
To take it a step further, drinking filtered water that is electrolyzed is an even better option since electrolyzed water has powerful anti-oxidizing properties.
According to Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi, heart surgeon and Director of the Water Institute of Japan:
“Water treated by electrolysis to increase its reduction potential is the best solution to the problem of providing a safe source of free electrons to block the oxidation of normal tissue by free oxygen radicals.”
Electrolyzed water is also referred to as ionized water, micro-water, hydrogen water, alkaline water, or Kangen Water™. Ionized water is a powerful antioxidant because of the hydroxyl ions it contains.
Ionized water that is bottled does not have the same benefits as freshly ionized water. The antioxidant potency of ionized water will start to diminish within 24 hours after it is made.
Thus, the best way to get ionized water is to purchase a water ionizer for your home and make it fresh daily. If interested, you can check out our water ionizer recommendations below.
