Ionized Water
3 Key Health Benefits

Ionized water is one of the healthiest waters to drink. It is dramatically changing the lives of people every day.

This water is known by many names, including electrolyzed water, alkaline water, Kangen Water®, micro-clustered water, and restructured water—just to name a few.

It is produced by a home water filtration system that not only filters out unhealthy contaminants from the source water, but it uses electrolysis to restructure the water.

Electrolyzed water has been used to treat a variety of conditions in Japanese hospitals and clinics for over 35 years.

There is so much to say about the health benefits of this water, but I will begin with a summary of the main benefits.

Increases Hydration

A high-quality water ionizer reduces the size of water molecule clusters by two-thirds and creates a hexagonal structure. Water that is restructured and micro-clustered is more easily absorbed by the body.

Micro-clustered water deeply hydrates the cells and can get into the nooks and crannies of the body.

People also tend to drink more ionized water because it tastes good and is much easier to drink since it absorbs so quickly and does not leave a full or bloated feeling in the stomach.

In addition, hexagonal water changes the electrical potential of cell membranes, which improves cell water turnover. This means that it becomes easier for nutrients to get into the cells and wastes to be excreted.

Acts as a Potent Antioxidant

Ionization also lowers the electrical charge of the source water, creating a negative oxidation reduction potential (-ORP).

The negative electrical charge of the drinking water makes it a strong antioxidant that can neutralize an abundance of free radicals in the body.

When it is freshly obtained from the ionizer, the water will have an ORP between -300 and -800. In fact, the antioxidant properties of this water are much higher than most food or nutritional supplements.

How does ionized water become an antioxidant? During ionization, the water gains an excess number of electrons, which gives it the negative ORP values.

However, when exposed to air, heat or light, the antioxidant potency starts to diminish. This is one of the main reasons why we do not see bottled ionized water for sale.

Drinking bottled ionized water simply would not provide nearly the same benefits as drinking it fresh from the ionizer.

According to many experts, the antioxidant properties of ionized water (which I will explain in much more detail in other articles) can provide the most health benefits, most notably improved immune system function, better digestion and elimination, and reduced inflammation and pain.

Balances Body pH

A water ionizer raises the pH of tap water or well water by splitting the water molecule (H2O) into positive ions (H+) and negative ions (OH-). The drinking water it produces will have a pH that is 10 to 1,000 times more alkaline than tap water.

The abundance of hydroxyl ions (OH-) in the drinking water increases the bicarbonate buffers in the blood, which helps to balance the pH of the body.

Ionized water is rich in ionic alkaline minerals. The ionization process makes the naturally occurring minerals in the water more bioavailable.

So the alkalinity of the water is important, but it’s not the key factor here. For example, people can add baking soda or alkaline pH drops to regular water and drink the alkaline water, but they will not experience the same benefits of drinking alkaline, ionized water.

The abundance of ionic alkaline minerals in the water can help remove acid wastes from the body, which will also improve blood oxygenation and normal cell growth.

Not All Ionizers Are the Same

The water ionizer technology is cutting edge, and all water ionizers are NOT the same. Just in the past few years, dozens of companies have jumped on the water ionizer bandwagon to capitalize on a booming market.

So beware. Some of the newer companies are producing ionizers that I consider unsafe. Know what to look for in an ionizer and check out the history and reputation of the company.

FYI, most of the so-called “independent water ionizer reviewers” online are not independent or objective at all.

I have not tried every new water ionizer on the market, but I do have enough personal experience and knowledge about the industry to understand what makes a high quality ionizer and what to avoid.

The brand I recommend most often is AlkaViva.
