Can lemon water relieve gas?

Can lemon water help with bad gas?

I would just like to know if lemon in water helps gas as I keep getting gas and abdomen pains, trapped wind, etc.

It is only lately this is happening. It does not happen very often, but I read your site and it says lemon helps.

How much do I drink and how often? Also can it relieve sugar cravings? I am slim but always want sugary stuff. I am not diabetic.

Thanks, any info is appreciated. Jeff

ANSWER:

Yes, drinking lemon water can help relieve gas. Drinking lemon water regularly can help with just about any ailment in the intestinal tract.

As I mentioned in the article on this page, lemon in water has a molecular structure that is very similar to the stomach’s digestive juice, as well as saliva and bile. Many people have digestive problems because their body is not producing enough hydrochloric acid to fully digest foods, especially animal proteins, dairy, gluten, and complex carbohydrates.

Thus, if you drink lemon in water about 30 minutes before any meal, it may help to digest your food and improve nutrient absorption. Just squeeze 1/4 to 1/2 lemon in about 6 to 8 ounces of water.

The fact is that eating or drinking anything bitter (like lemon juice, aloe vera juice, or apple cider vinegar in water) before a meal will stimulate the digestive juices.

In addition, lemon water or any type of bitter foods or beverages can help reduce sugar cravings. Just sip on some lemon water anytime you have a sugar craving and see if it helps.

Possible Causes of Gas and Bloating

The problem of gas and bloating is a common complaint with many customers who visit the health food store where I work. This uncomfortable health issue has many potential causes and it is a good idea to get to the bottom of it. Just a few of the possible causes include:

1. Dehydration – A lack of adequate water intake on a daily basis can create a very unhealthy environment in the colon that is dry, acidic, and prone to bad bacteria and accumulated toxins. First and foremost, you need to drink enough plain, filtered water each day to stay hydrated.

2. Poor food combining — Combining certain foods together at a meal will inevitably cause gas and bloating for just about anyone. The simple guidelines are this: Eat fruit by itself (at least 1-2 hours before or after meals). Vegetables are ok to combine with meat, dairy, fish, and starches (potatoes, pasta, rice, bread, etc.). However, all animal protein and fish do NOT combine well with starches. You will do much better if you combine meat with vegetables during meals, and avoid the breads, potatoes, pastas, etc.

3. Digestive enzymes — Some people just seem to lack enough digestive enzymes to fully break down certain foods. Beans are common culprits but certain grains or dairy foods can cause problems for others. So pay attention to what foods or combinations of foods you are eating that may be causing the gas. Once you know that, you can then decide not to eat those foods or food combinations or you can start taking full-spectrum digestive enzymes with meals.

4. Bacteria or fungus — An unhealthy colon and acidic condition in the body can lead to an overgrowth of bad bacteria or fungus (such as Candida). Candida is a yeast infection that can cause many problems in the body, especially digestive issues such as gas, bloating, indigestion, constipation, as well as sugar cravings. Certain medications (including antibiotics) can destroy much of the good bacteria in the intestines which can lead to an overgrowth of bad bacteria. For this reason, it is always a good idea to take a good quality probiotic (30 billion or more of the healthy bacteria) during and after any round of antibiotics or any type of illness. We need the good bacteria to maintain colon health and immunity.

5. Stress — Any degree of stress can significantly affect digestive and eliminative processes in the body. Stress causes the digestive functions to slow down and thus decomposing food sits in the intestines for too long and becomes toxic. Try not to eat big meals when under stress. And when you do eat, breathe deeply and chew your food very slowly.
