Water Benefits Health News, Issue #10

August 29, 2012

Hello, Water Friend,

Have you noticed bottled or canned coconut water showing up more and more in your grocery or health food store? Have you wondered if coconut water is really healthy to drink?

Our feature article this issue is about the health benefits of coconut water. Yes, there are many health benefits, and I hope you will take a few minutes to check it out.

However, I also want to mention that no beverage replaces our daily need for plain water. Water is involved in every function of the body, and without adequate daily water intake, all of the organs and systems in the body simply do not work as well.

Some fruit juices, sodas, teas, coffees, and other beverages do provide some fluid and nutrients for the body, but they do NOT replace our body's basic daily need for plain water. Some of the reasons for this are explained in this issue’s article on the "Importance of Drinking Water."

A high percentage of people suffer from one or more symptoms of chronic dehydration. To learn more about these symptoms, you can check out the article below, "12 Symptoms of Chronic Dehydration."

I believe that one of the main reasons for the dehydration epidemic is because we are drinking so many other beverages (most of which are sweetened) in place of clean water.

There are certainly many health benefits of coconut water, especially if you can get it straight from the coconut!

If you are drinking enough water daily to stay fully hydrated and are still thirsty enough to drink a glass of coconut water on occasion, I encourage you to try it. Many people enjoy the taste and the numerous health benefits!

To your health and hydration,

Nancy Hearn, CNC

Health Benefits of Coconut Water

The benefits of coconut water are vast. The health benefits range from providing daily energy and hydration to long-term prevention of disease and sickness.

Coconut water has been drunk for thousands of years, and for some people it is a daily drink. The natives of climate cultures such as Indonesia and the Philippines crack the coconuts open with a machete and drink the water straight from the shell.

The ripe age of a coconut is 5 to 7 months. If you try to drink from a coconut before that, the water will be bitter and devoid of most nutrients. After the coconut fully ripens, it will lose most of its free water and will be absorbed by the fruit.
