Water Benefits Health News, Issue #13

December 10, 2012

Hello, Water Friend,

It’s that wonderful yet busy time of year again . . .

I know you are busy, so I will keep this newsletter short with a simple reminder for the holiday season:

Stay hydrated, stay healthy!

Here are some reasons why you might want to try to drink extra water this month:

1. Reduces stress. Staying hydrated does improve brain and nervous system function, so drinking water can actually help to reduce the types of thoughts and feelings that lead to the stress response in the body. Water also helps to regulate hormonal function in the body, including the stress hormone cortisol.

2. Improves immune function. Water is involved in every single function in the body, including the highly complex immune system. Drinking extra water during the holidays will also help our bodies flush out toxins and help keep the body from becoming over-acidic, a condition that makes us more vulnerable to colds and flu, as well as more serious health problems.

3. Decreases appetite. During the holidays, most of us tend to overeat foods that are higher in fat, salt and sugar. A simple way to help prevent overeating and weight gain is to drink at least 16 oz. of water about 30 minutes before any meal or holiday gathering. Staying hydrated throughout the day will also decrease appetite and sugar cravings.

4. Minimizes symptoms of hangovers. Alcohol consumption causes dehydration in the body. That is why the acute symptoms of hangovers are similar to the acute symptoms of dehydration. Thus, drinking more water before and after alcohol consumption can help minimize hangover symptoms but, more importantly, can also reduce the negative health effects of alcohol on your body.

I hope you will take the time to check out a few of the related articles in this issue. If you tend to drink more alcohol during the holidays, you might want to check out Merlin’s recent article on “Alcohol and Dehydration.”

To your health and hydration,
